From The Editor - Golden Tips - Darjeeling Travel Guide Book
It is a great pleasure to launch the inaugural issue of Golden Tips – Darjeeling (Your Travel Guide), the first truly authentic and comprehensive periodical travel guide on Darjeeling to be published quarterly. An entire section on Sikkim will also be a part of this travel guide from the next issue onwards. Golden Tips – Darjeeling is expected to provide a complete solution to the discerning tourist planning to visit this hill town.
Apart from authentic and latest information we will also feature regular articles on culture, folk, art, festivals, heritage landmarks and events in town. It was way back in 1979, that I had first published a guide book on Darjeeling, under the aegis of the Leo Club – of which I was the president. Even though we could not continue with the book due to reasons beyond one’s control I had always wanted to the carry forward the initiative we had taken as young people wanting to do something for the place. It has taken several months to conceive, plan, design, edit and finally publish this guide book in its new avatar. A dedicated team of able writers, photographers and designers have finally made this publication a reality.
As a native of Darjeeling – having been born and grown up here and coming from a family whose ancestors migrated to this beautiful Hills over a century ago, Darjeeling has always been close to my heart. Inspite of having settled in Delhi for the past 25 years, I must have made over a hundred trips to the place where I have always belonged. Darjeeling has a huge potential to attract even more tourists but this can happen only if we all join hands to promote the place in a bigger way. I sincerely feel that we should look at hosting several promotion activities to help the world discover the beautiful hills during monsoon and winter, apart from the regular tourist season. It need not be mentioned that special emphasis must be laid in creating proper infrastructure and executing ideas that will help filter the benefits of the tourism industry at the grass root. Promotion of off beat location and tea tourism also makes sound business sense. The citizens, travel industry and the government should also seriously look into upgradation of Bagdogra airport into an international one. This would give a new dimension to tourism in Darjeeling and Sikkim and could also feature as a part of the ever growing Buddhist tourism sector.
I sincerely hope that this Travel Guide will go a long way in promoting tourism in this part of the country.
I would sincerely thank all those who have helped our dreams come true and would also like to put a word of gratitude towards the advertisers without whom our project would have had been that much harder.
We solicit suggestions from our readers to help us improve our guide book and would also be glad to publish your articles on your stay in the Hills.
The Golden Tips – Darjeeling team offers Greetings to all its readers on the occasions of HAPPY NEW YEAR!
With best wishes
