From The Editor - Golden Tips - Darjeeling & Sikkim Your Travel Guide Book

I have great pleasure in launching the re-christened issue of Darjeeling & Sikkim- Your Travel Guide. We at Golden Tips welcome Sikkim in all Cordiality as an equally important part of our publication and hope that Golden Tips in its new avatar will usher a major joint effort in the promotion of tourism in both the Himalayan regions.

The inaugural issue launched last year has received a lot of attention from most quarters. The very concept of having brought out the Travel Guide, its editorial content, design & layout, photography, printing, wide distribution & availability have all been genuinely appreciated across the district as well as in Sikkim where the state’s inclusion has generated a lot of enthusiasm.

Complimentary copies have been sent to leading hotels, travel agents government agencies & embassies across India and selectively overseas. Scores of leading bookstores at airport and major Indian cities have exhibited & sold copies of the same.

Several hundred copies have been procured by leading hotels in Darjeeling & Sikkim to distribute free to their resident guests. The Guide is also available from most book shops, studios, prominent stores and several hotels in Darjeeling, Sikkim and also at several Bagdogra & Kolkata airport counters. Delegates to the North Point- Loreto Reunion were also handed over a copy each.

After the launch of the inaugural issue last October, we reviewed the periodicity of the Travel Guide and based on market feedback, we decided to convert to a bi-annual. However, we experienced further delay in launching this issue due to circumstances beyond control for which we offer our sincere apologies to our readers and especially to our advertisers who have shown exemplary patience. We express our gratitude for the same.

The granting of Geographical Indication protection to Darjeeling Tea in France & USA was a major victory for our Tea Board which had fought a long and legal battle on foreign soil to safeguard the goodwill of the name Darjeeling. This is only the beginning and most major countries have already red the writing on the wall. We shall witness in the not too distant future, similar protection for Darjeeling, engulfing the entire globe much to the joy of the Government, the industry and trade, lovers of this beverage and the denizens of Darjeeling Kudos to the Tea Board and to the Indian fighting spirit.

Even though it wasn’t roses all the way. Darjeelingites had a pleasant surprise waiting for them on 14th February last. An inch an hour for half the day was all that it took to clothe the town in a half-feet-thick blanket of snow. It was after 12 full years that Valentine’s Day witnessed such a snow fall. Thereafter it was just snowballs, snow men, fun-n-frolic whether at the Mall or elsewhere. Photographers obviously had a field day. So what if traffic was held up, there was no electricity inspite  of the biting cold, phones refused to work and the taps too went dry !

Recently Sikkim was host to the Sectoral Summit of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on Tourism and the Hospitality sector held in Gangtok last month. Union Minister for Dept of North Eastern Region (Doner) & Chairman NEC, Mani Shanker Aiyer & Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, Governors of Assam & Arunchal Pradesh & CMs of Nagaland , Mizoram & Sikkim jointly announced The Gangtok Declaration, a tourism Master Plan for the development of Tourism in the North East region. We welcome this development and hope the Summit will catalyse the growth in tourist inflow in this area both in the short & long term.

The hills are in the midst of a tourist season and I hope that this Travel Guide comes in handy for most visitors. I join my team at Golden tips in offering our sincere thanks and best wishes to all our readers and invite them to send us their suggestions, novel ideas & contributions to make Your Travel Guide even better.

With best wishes
Madhav Sarda
