A cup of delight before a flight forty flavours, mocktails to liven up menu
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Siliguri, May 20: A sudden delay at Bagdogra Airport could well turn into an opportunity for tourists to enjoy their favourite cuppa.

A tea bar — the first of its kind at any airport in the country — was officially opened yesterday by O.P. Arya, additional secretary to the Union ministry of commerce, in the presence of Basudeb Banerjee, the chairman of Tea Board of India. Here, passengers can choose from an array of exclusive Darjeeling brew served up hot and cold, along with mocktails for the more adventurous.

The bar will be run by Golden Tips, a 74-year-old tea company, which has branches in Calcutta, Gangtok and Darjeeling.

“A special tea menu has been drawn up comprising over 40 kinds of fine tea and mocktails,” said Madhav Sarda, managing director of Golden Tips. Sitting in air-conditioned environs, one can have tea ranging from fine Darjeeling at Rs 10 a cup to the rare White Tea at Rs 90 a cup. Mocktails like Passion Fruit, Pineapple Twister and Tutea- Fruitea will also be available.

The company is negotiating with various airlines operating at Bagdogra for a tie-up that will enable passengers to use the bar, said the publicity manager, Subrata Choudhury. They can also pick up one of the assorted tea packs, which the company is known for, he added.

Located on the ground floor of the airport, the 200sqft bar, which has been leased out to Golden Tips by Airports Authority of India, can accommodate 18 people at a time, Choudhury added.

“We had come to Darjeeling for a view of the Himalayas and its lovely tea,” said Konrad Rusch, a German lawyer, who was among the first visitors to the bar. “Darjeeling tea is very popular in Germany and available in supermarkets.”
